On 5th June, former WRC Captain Ian McLellan passed away.

Ian was a former captain of Bewdley RC and of Worcester RC and although only a member at WRC for about 4-5 years he rowed for Worcester in the Thames Cup at Henley – of which he was always proud.

Ian was Captain at Worcester Rowing Club in 1987 prior to moving to Ironbridge Rowing Club in 1988.  His partner of 32 years, Gail Thomas, says he moved to Ironbridge with the intention of doing some “casual rowing” after rowing and sculling at a high level for Worcester and Bewdley. This plan was scuppered when his casual rowing career started as competing in Elite coxed pairs.

Ian became an umpire in 2011 and did the occasional bits of coaching as his way of giving back to the sport he loved.
